DDS XRCE – A New Specification

The board of directors of the Object Management Group® (OMG®), an international, open membership, not-for-profit technology standards consortium, adopted the DDS-XRCE specification at its members meeting from June 18-22 in Boston, Massachusetts. The goal of DDS-XRCE (Data-Distribution Service for eXtremely Resource Constrained Environment™) is to deliver the benefits of the Data-Distribution Service™ (DDS™) databus to resource-constrained devices.

“DDS-XRCE brings the power and flexibility of DDS technology to highly-constrained edge devices. The ability to integrate into existing DDS architectures, coupled with multi-vendor interoperability and support, makes this new protocol an exciting choice for Industrial Internet applications. DDS-XRCE will allow limited CPU and memory devices (e.g. micro controllers with less than 64 KB of memory), devices using very low-bandwidth communications (e.g. LoWPANs, IEEE 802.15.4 and ZigBee), and battery-powered devices that need to undergo deep-sleep cycles. The DDS-XRCE specification will enable new applications in smart city, agriculture and transportation systems to leverage the DDS databus. It will allow them to use the same DDS connectivity technology recommended by the Industrial Internet Consortium® in the Industrial Internet Connectivity and Security Framework architectures.”
